Koro Sun Resort, Private Mail Bag Vanua Levu, Savusavu
Right around the 180° meridian, where each new day officially begins according to Coordinated Universal Time and Greenwich Mean Time, guests can find one very secluded island out of Fiji's 300 where the Koro Sun Resort is located. The resort was built by a local who transformed the 150 acres of coconut plantation into a nature oriented resort. Guests arrive first at either of Nadi or Suva airports and then make an onward flight to the Koro Sun Resort. Diving enthusiasts will appreciate the hotel's proximity to Namena Island Marine Reserve and the Rainbow Reef in the Somosomo Straits. The hotel requires divers to present certification before embarking on diving excursions and also offers P A D I and S S I certification on site (including Divemaster curricula). In addition to diving, the Koro Sun's offers a 9 hole golf course and the Rainforest Spa amidst a lush canopy of greenery, the sweet scent of fresh tropical flowers, and the sounds of waterfalls and streams. The Rainforest Spa is set in the middle of gently flowing water and the songs of rare indigenous birds. Treatments incorporate indigenous ingredients, such as papaya, pineapple, pure virgin coconut oil, sea salt, Fijian cane sugar, seaweed, local nuts, star fruit, leaves from the banana and ti plants for its wraps, scrubs, facials and signature massages. The hotel's 18 rooms (called bures) are all private and fully air conditioned and feature views of the ocean and reefs. The guestrooms recently underwent a complete redesign, including the bathrooms, which now feature countertop sink bowls and larger mirrors. Increased window area, new louvers and ribbed glass double french style rear exterior glass doors that open onto a private garden courtyard area with patio furniture are also products of the renovation. Savusavu Airport is temporarily closed due to renovation. All flights into Savusavu Airport have been rerouted to Labasa Airport. Work is expected to be completed by 05 November, 2008
